Jason Smith sworn in as district attorney for New Hanover and Pender Counties
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Newly elected District Attorney Jason Smith took the oath of office just after 8 a.m. at the New Hanover County Courthouse Tuesday morning.
Smith will lead the sixth prosecutorial district following outgoing DA Rebecca Zimmer Donaldson, who lost to Smith last month. Zimmer Donaldson was appointed by Gov. Roy Cooper after DA Ben David retired.
David—who attended the ceremony—served as DA for 20 years. Zimmer Donaldson was not in attendance.
Assistant district attorneys and legal assistants for the DA’s office were also sworn in at the ceremony.
During his remarks, Smith thanked the community for electing him and said he’s ready to get to work.
“We’re here for you. We’re here to be your voice in this courtroom, we’re here to be your voice when we’re seeking justice for you,” Smith said.
Smith previously served as an assistant district attorney for 14 years, working primarily in Pender Coynty. In November’s election, he received 53% of the vote.
