Wreaths of Honor: Remembering those who served

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) –The USS North Carolina honored those who have served in remembrance of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

“Wreaths of Honor” is an annual event in its third year.

Over 250 wreaths, all donated by loved ones, lined the battleship as a tribute to those who have fought—and continue to fight—for our freedoms. The wreaths were a powerful symbol of respect and remembrance.

Shortly before 1 p.m., attendees were invited to observe a moment of silence in commemoration of the attack on Pearl Harbor, marking the moment it began in 1941.

One of the veterans present was 99-year-old World War II veteran Louis Bourgault, shares why he is aboard the ship today.

“To honor those who didn’t make it with us… I’ve always been concerned about those who didn’t come back. I was one of the lucky ones. I enjoy being outdoors and seeing the other people and meeting the tourists—the tourists on the ship are just fantastic.”

The wreaths will remain on display at the USS North Carolina through the first weekend of January, continuing to serve as a moving reminder of the sacrifices made by so many.
