The Town of Oak Island discusses plans for the upcoming parking season

"Everyone assumes that a season pass equates to a parking space every day on the beachfront, and that is untrue."

BRUNSWICK COUNTY (WWAY)–Oak Island Town Council members discussed several recommendations Tuesday night for their upcoming parking season — which starts again in April.
Rates would remain the same for residents and visitors. The council discussed season pass sales, extending parking dates, and surveying parking at the town pier. After considering extending the season to October 30th, council members decided to keep it as it is now — the end of September. What’s left to determine is if they should increase seasonal permit sales to 2,000 — which would be 500 more than usual. This will not affect sales on resident parking permits, as well as hourly, daily, and weekly permits. Mayor Liz White says those decisions will be made after the town gets the results of a $75,000 parking survey.

“We have contracted with a company for our parking program. So, to look at the spaces, where they are, their size, and what they accommodate to see if where else we can add spaces to be able to economize,” said White.

“Everyone assumes that a season pass equates to a parking space every day on the beachfront, and that is untrue,” said Councilman Mark Martin.

Mayor White says the study should be completed by January.
