WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A major upgrade is coming to Gordon Road, one of Wilmington’s busiest roadways, following a recently awarded contract by the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

The $50.8 million project will widen 2.5 miles of Gordon Road between Market Street (U.S. 17) and Interstate 40 to four lanes, featuring a raised median and reduced conflict intersections designed to improve safety.

The plans also include a multi-use path and sidewalks along the entire project length, as well as upgrades to utilities, drainage systems, and traffic signals, according to NCDOT.

The contract was awarded to S.T. Wooten Corp., a Wilson-based company. Construction is slated to begin next spring, with substantial completion expected by the summer of 2029.
