WIRE youth center re-opens its doors in Downtown Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It’s a way to support the needs of at-risk students and their families in a safe environment. The Wilmington youth center for Inspiration, Recreation and Education, or WIRE, re-opened its doors.

The new building is on the corner of Orange and 11th Streets. WIRE provides positive after school programs for New Hanover County students in grade three through 12. The organization focuses on educational, physical and also mental support. It also provides resources and referrals for many underprivileged kids in the community.

“When they see other minorities in these jobs or they see other people who look like them, going out and fulfilling these great jobs and having these vocations, that impacts them. But, sometimes the factors with the community keep them from seeing beyond the little microcosm that they’re apart of,” Marrio Jeter, WIRE operations director, says.

Jeter says the re-opening of this building was an 18 month process full of hard work.
