Hundreds attend Transition Fair for students with special needs
NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — In honor of National Disability Employement Awareness Month, New Hanover County Schools hosted it’s annual Transition Fair Thursday in downtown Wilmington.
Hundreds attended the event that gave students with disabilities or special needs the tools necessary to transition into the workforce.
Dozens of various agencies were there to provide support and information for parents and students from the preschool level through high school.
It’s an event organizers hope will affect student’s lives for the better.
“I hope people leave this event already having contacts for community organizations that can support them and their families,” Special Education and Related Services Director Julie Askew said. “I hope that they have ideas of types of employment opportunities their child could have when they’re moving into their independent world and their post school world.”
This is the seventh year New Hanover County Schools have hosted this event.
Organizers say they’ve had more parents this year then ever before and hope it continues to grow.
