The Healing Place opens overnight shelter, needs item donations
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — With temperatures dropping below freezing nearly every day this week, several warming shelters in our area will be working to house Wilmington’s homeless neighbors.
One of those shelters is at The Healing Place in New Hanover County. The organization is seeing an increased need as homeless residents try to stay out of the cold.
The shelter is adding 18 additional beds and will be open every night at 3 p.m. when temperatures drop below freezing for two consecutive nights.
People seeking shelter are provided with clothes, food, a bed, and the ability to connect with detox services.
Though, as Executive Director Brian Mingia said, they need community support.
“We’re seeing thousands of people each year that we’re able to reach out to and give some hope to, and that is something this community hadn’t had previous to us being here,” Mingia said.
The organization is currently in need of:
- Clothes donations like coats, hats, or scarves
- Hygiene items
- Blankets and bedding.
You can drop off those items or monetary donations at The Healing Place at 1000 Medical Center Drive during business hours.
