Man killed in Brunswick County crash identified

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The NC Highway Patrol has identified the man killed in a crash on US 74 and Maco Road in Brunswick County.

The NC Highway Patrol says the call came in around 11:30 a.m.

According to Trooper D. Morgan, Donald Fortson, 77, of Bolton, was driving west on US 74 when he tried to turn left onto Maco Road. He had a green light, but not a green arrow.

He turned in front of Robert Hall, 64, of Matthews, who was heading east on US 74.

Investigators say Hall t-boned Fortson. Fortson was ejected from his truck and pronounced dead at the scene.

Trooper Morgan says Hall was coming into town to visit his mother, who had gotten into a prior accident.

Hall had minor injuries and was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

No charges are expected. Alcohol was not a factor, Morgan says.

US 74 was partially closed for about 2 hours.
