City of Wilmington receives check from Duke Energy for flood gauges
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The City of Wilmington was presented with a $25,000 check by Duke Energy during the City Council meeting Tuesday evening to help protect homes and residents from flooding.
The money would be used to purchase four flood gauges.
The gauges will be placed in several waterways throughout the city, including Barnards Creek, which flows into the Cape Fear River south of the city’s port.
One gauge is in place in the Cape Fear River, near the city.
Mayor Bill Saffo said the gauges will help the city better prepare for emergencies.
“So its important we have these gauges to determine how we build our resiliency, how we work with our emergency management folks and people in those areas that are impacted by this,” Saffo said. “So this is critically important and was something we had been talking about.”
The exact time when the gauges will be put in place is not known.
