Man visiting NC for bachelor party dies in fall from waterfall

OLD FORT, N.C. (WSPA) — A Georgia man has died after falling from a waterfall in Old Fort on Saturday morning.

According to McDowell County Emergency Services, the victim fell from Upper Catawba Falls shortly before 11:45 a.m.

Around 60 personnel were needed to pull the victim’s body from the rugged and steep terrain.

Officials say the victim was finally pulled from the area around 5:30 p.m.

The McDowell County Sheriff’s Office says 37-year-old Jimmy Paul Schmidt from Georgia was looking out over the falls when he lost his footing and fell.

Schmidt was in the Asheville area for a bachelor party, according to deputies.
