NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The phase two expansion of Smith Creek Park began this week.

A Spokesman for new Hanover county says it will add a restroom and picnic shelter, nature play, and environmental education features, public art, and a 1-mile perimeter trail to the county park.

Due to recent incidents of vandalism to the construction area, a temporary construction fence is being installed to protect ongoing work.

The sheriff’s office is also increasing patrols and installing temporary security cameras in the area.

The county is establishing a temporary walking path from emerald drive to the existing park.
