Could trees on the Pender County Courthouse Square be removed?

BURGAW, NC (WWAY) — Pender County Commissioners must decide what to do with mature trees located on the courthouse square in Burgaw.

In 2017, an arborist surveyed each of the laurel oak trees to determine if they should be removed. The assessment recommended the removal of two-thirds of the trees due to their age and the potential threat risk.

While a few trees have been removed in recent years, some residents feel the trees should be preserved and not cut down.

A new plan calls for removing the trees and planting new ones over a two-year period. Click here to see the tree removal proposal.

The commission meeting will be held Monday, March 19 at the Public Assembly Room located at 805 South Walker Street in Burgaw. Residents who wish to comment at the meeting should sign up prior to the start of the meeting at 4 p.m.
