DOGE to cut UNCW substance abuse recovery program

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, is cutting funding for a program that aims to help students who are recovering from substance abuse at UNCW.

The university’s Collegiate Recovery Center, also known as CRC Hawk, helps students who are either recovering from substance abuse or those affected by another person’s addiction.

CRC Hawk is one of 14 recovery programs in the UNC system.

The UNCW program received a $50,000 grant for the 2024- 2025 academic year and had about $17,000 remaining in its fund.

The grant the program received is part of an 11-billion dollar cut by DOGE to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
