East Columbus picks up 9-4 road win over Ashley

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) – Going up in competition for a non-conference bout, 1A East Columbus softball took down 4A Ashley 9-4 on the road Wednesday.

The Gators did not waste time getting on the board as an RBI groundout by Gracie Coyle broke the ice. East Columbus’ pitcher also hit a 2 RBI double and 3 RBI triple.

Ranked 4th in Class 1A East, Gators Head Coach Jason Nance says playing bigger schools like Ashley will serve them well in the near future.

“Every time we come down here, they play hard,” Nance said. “They play in a very tough conference. They got to be focused. It just gets us ready for the playoffs because usually in the first or second round, we’ll see a team like them. They got a couple players.”
