Burgaw man in custody after deadly hit and run

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A Burgaw man is in custody after a bicyclist died in a hit-and-run on Saturday.

According to the Wilmington Police Department, units responded to the 5100 block of Wrightsville Avenue for a vehicle vs. e-bike collision that happened on Saturday morning just after 12:15 a.m.

The driver of the vehicle fled the scene before officers arrived.

The bicyclist, John Williams, 57, was transported to the hospital by EMS with serious injuries. He later died on Sunday.

After an investigation by the WPD, the driver of the vehicle has been identified as David Neely, 68.

He was taken into custody and initially charged with DWI-Serious Injury and Felony Hit and Run. He has since been charged with 2nd Degree Murder.

Neely is being held without bond at the NHSO Detention Center.
