BURGAW, NC (WWAY) — The Town of Burgaw confirms its finance officer is no longer employed following his arrest earlier this week on DWI and hit-and-run charges.

Hans Kalwitz, 42, was charged Monday with Driving While Impaired, Hit and Run, and Failure to Report an Accident. His bond was set at $1,500 secured.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the incident happened just before noon Monday on Center Drive near Thornton Drive in Hampstead. Troopers say a 14-year-old riding a bicycle was struck by a Tesla. The teen was not injured.

Kalwitz was identified as the suspect, and troopers later found the Tesla at his home nearby.

Kalwitz had only recently joined the Town of Burgaw as finance officer in February. Town officials originally initially placed him on administrative leave without pay pending an internal investigation, but now confirm he is no longer with the town.

“The Town of Burgaw has completed its internal investigation regarding the recent incident involving Hans Kalwitz. As a result of this investigation, Mr. Kalwitz is no longer employed with
the Town. The Town remains committed to upholding the highest standards of conduct and accountability among its staff. No further comment will be provided on this personnel matter,” the Town of Burgaw said in a statement.
