Memorial service to be held Saturday for Sunny Point fire chief
SUNNY POINT, NC (WWAY) — Sunny Point Fire Chief Michael Scott died at the age of 51 earlier this week.
Southport Fire Chief Charles Drew says Scott was battling cancer. His death was ruled a line of duty death. Studies have shown firefighters face higher levels of occupational-related cancer than the general population.
A resident of Southport, Drew says Scott was a good friend who he worked with often.
With the two fire departments being only a couple of miles apart, the two agencies often collaborate for trainings and response.
As chief, Scott also led Drew’s father—Charles T. Drew—who himself was a firefighter at Sunny Point.
“If there’s one thing about it, Chief Scott always looked out for his firefighters,” Drew said. “He always had their best interest at heart. He always made sure they had good benefits, good coverage, good resources, good training.”
Scott leaves behind a wife and son.
Chief drew says the Southport Fire Department will hold a memorial service for Scott at fire department HQ on North Howe Street in Southport Saturday at 10 a.m.
