CFPUA: Mechanical failure led to fluoride spike in water
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A mechanical failure at the Richardson Nanofiltration Plant is what caused high fluoride levels earlier this week, says Cape Fear Public Utility Authority.
CFPUA says fluoride siphoned into stored water during the plant’s off period.
When the plant restarted, high levels of fluoride released into the water.
CFPUA says fluoride is tested every four hours so once high levels were detected, staff shut down operations and no more water was pumped from the plant.
