Child injured, suspect arrested after hit-and-run in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A child in Wilmington is injured after being hit by a car while riding a bike Tuesday night.

A Wilmington police spokeswoman said around 9:35 p.m. Tuesday, officers responded to the 5500 block of Park Avenue in reference to an 11-year-old child being hit by a vehicle.

The victim suffered a broken leg in the collision.

While officers were en route, dispatch said the suspect was leaving the scene and a witness was following him. Police said the suspect stopped at the Exxon at Greenville Loop Rd. and Oleander Dr., where he was taken into custody.

Reyes Ortiz, 41, has been charged with Felony Hit and Run and DWI. He received a $25,000 secured bond.
