NC House passes bill banning DEI in local and state government
RALEIGH, NC (WWAY) — The North Carolina House of Representatives has passed a bill banning diversity, equity, and inclusion programs in state and local governments.
House Bill 171 would ensure that no agency at the state or local level would promote, support, or fund workplace DEI programs.
A state employee who violates the law could lose their job.
Representative Brendon Jones of Columbus County was the bill’s primary sponsor.
The bill passed along party lines as 69 republicans voted in favor, while 45 democrats voted against.
It now goes to the Senate for further discussion.
WWAY reached out to Representative Jones’ office for comment, but has not heard back at this time.
