WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) — Following their first state title in program history, Wilmington’s Superb Fútbol Club’s U14 team will represent North Carolina at Regionals this weekend in Plano, Texas.

The club claimed gold over well over 100 teams that compete in the Tar Heel State. Head Coach and Hoggard alum Andres Frick says this was a long time coming for local soccer talent.

“It’s a huge honor for the players, for the club as well,” Frick said. “I think it’s something that we take great pride in. I think it’s huge for just Wilmington area soccer as well. You see high school teams going far. You see other clubs going far as well. It just shows that soccer is developing here in Wilmington as well.”

A total of 16 teams will compete at Regionals, one from each state across the South. That includes four groups of four.

It will be the biggest stage yet for the players, who plan on using their strength to try and advance to nationals.

“We’re very good together,” Coltyn Melton said. “We’re very close to each other off and on the field. We’ve just been connecting ever since. We’ve been together for I don’t know how many years. Probably three to four years. We’re very fine as a team.”

“I think a lot of kids love it,” Julian Macias said. “It’s just fun to play. A lot of them want to make it to professional. It’s just a beautiful game. I think our strength is our communication and our bond and how we play with the ball. We’re not that physical, but we do know how to pass the ball around and keep possession.”

The team hopes to show what the Cape Fear has to offer.

“For us, we want to go in, we want to have fun and we want to show what Superb Fútbol Club’s about,” Frick said. “We want to show what North Carolina soccer’s about and enjoy being on that stage. I don’t think there’s a specific place where we want to finish. We just want to enjoy being in that environment.”

Regionals begin on Friday and run until June 17.
