NORTH CAROLINA (WWAY) — A day after hundreds of fishermen protested against a controversial amendment that would impact shrimp trawling throughout the state, the newly amended bill will not advance out of the house.

An amendment to House Bill 442 would have banned all inshore shrimp trawling and within a half mile of the coast.

The amended version of HB 442 had been passed in the senate, but after a meeting earlier today,  representatives from the house say they will not move forward with the bill this legislative session.

Brunswick County Representative Frank Iler originally championed House Bill 442 before the shrimp trawling amendment was added.

The original bill would have brought back the state’s recreational flounder season.
