New Hanover County Board of Education voted against reinstating ‘Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You’
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Tuesday the New Hanover County Board of Education voted 5-1 against reinstating the book; Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You.
‘Stamped’ will not be in district course content, but it is still permitted in high school libraries.
This follows the county’s curriculum committee’s recommendation to lift the ban on ‘Stamped’ as an instructional resource in AP language and composition classes.
School board member Tim Merrick was the only vote in favor of reinstating the book.
“When we treat our teachers and our public this way to me that is a breach of decorum. So, I will not be supporting this board to continue with any book banning and overriding the school’s committee, the district’s committee,”
The book was banned by the board in September 2023. School board member Judy Justice was not at the agenda review meeting.
