What’s next? Red Cross representative gives long term perspective

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Red Cross says help for Hurricane Florence victims will continue indefinitely.

Evacuees were moved to three different locations in two days and were left wondering what will happen next. Dave Schoeneck of the Red Cross says they intend to keep helping until everyone is settled.

“Our first priority is safety,” Schoeneck says. “We want to put people up in a place that is safe, that is comfortable, that is healthy for them to stay.”

He also says that they will keep working people with people displaced by Hurricane Florence until everyone is taken care of. At this point Schoeneck says housing is primarily “people who have no other resource.”

Those people will be continuously cared for he says and promises “to be there for them as long as they are needed.”

Schoeneck says that there is no end point for care, but people will eventually be transitioned to local charities who cater to the displaced.
