Woman dies after crashing into truck picking up storm debris
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A Wilmington woman died after her car crashed into a dump truck picking up storm debris in New Hanover County Sunday afternoon.
The accident happened at the intersection of Gordon Road and Rogers Drive around 2:13 p.m.
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, 48-year-old Basilio Garcia, of Miami, was operating a dump truck and pulling a trailer. The truck, licensed to a Florida company called County Waste, was assisting with storm cleanup and removal.
The truck was traveling westbound on Gordon Road. The highway patrol says Jacqueline Dawson, 53, of Wilmington, was on Rogers Road driving a white Acura when she pulled into the path of the dump truck.
After colliding with the truck, the Acura made contact with another vehicle, a blue Honda CRV occupied by two people.
Dawson was not wearing a seatbelt and died at the scene, the highway patrol said.
The two people in the Honda CRV suffered minor injuries and were transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
Trooper Jordan Maness said Dawson failed to yield the right-of-way to the dump truck.
The crash remains under investigation.
“This accident serves as a reminder to use caution any time you’re around these large trucks that are assisting with debris pickup and be sure to wear your seatbelt,” Maness said.
