Should we expect another aggressive flu season?

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — As we slowly start to feel the chills of cold, fall weather, flu chances start to increase. Reports across the state are similar to last year, which was the worst season in over four decades.

Last year, North Carolina saw 391 flu related deaths.

Promina Health Physician Brian Lanier says winter pushes people in closer proximity which can help to spread germs. He says the earlier you get the shot the longer you have the protection.

“It’s important to protect ourselves individually from influenza, which is a horrible illness to get but its also really important to protect those people that would be more affected by the flu or people who cant be immunized against influenza,” said Lanier.

He says it takes about two weeks for the body to get the full benefit of the vaccination so it is best to get it now.
