OAK ISLAND, NC (WWAY) — A 15-year-old girl was injured Monday afternoon after she was run over while lying on the beach.

Around 2:15 pm, emergency crews responded to the beach area between Keziah Street and Womble Street following reports of a pedestrian hit by a vehicle. When officers with the Oak Island Police Department arrived, they learned that a truck conducting beach survey work had run over the girl’s legs while she was lying on the sand.

The teen was treated on the scene for what officials believe are non-life-threatening injuries. As a precaution, she was later taken to Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center in Bolivia.

The Town of Oak Island said the vehicle involved, a 2020 GMC pickup, was operated by TI Coastal Services, a contractor hired by engineering firm Moffatt & Nichol. The firm is preparing for the town’s upcoming 2025 – 26 Beach Nourishment Project.

Due to the victim’s age, no additional identifying information will be released.

No word yet on whether anyone will face charges.
