Calabash fire crews contain fire at RV storage lot

CALABASH, NC (WWAY) — Firefighters battled intense flames and brutal heat Saturday as a fire involving multiple travel trailers broke out at an RV storage facility in Brunswick County.
The Calabash Fire Department said crews were dispatched just after 11:30 a.m. to Tommy’s RV Storage on Ash Little River Road for a non-dwelling structure fire. When firefighters arrived, they found several unoccupied travel trailers engulfed in flames with thick black smoke rising from the property.
Despite a locked gate blocking initial access and a heat index soaring to 107 degrees, crews were able to contain the fire in about an hour. No injuries were reported.
Responding units included mutual aid from Sunset Beach, Ocean Isle Beach, Grissettown-Longwood, Waccamaw, and Horry County fire departments. The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office and Brunswick County EMS also responded, along with the Calabash Fire Department Auxiliary’s Prolonged Incident Response Team (PIRT), which provided firefighter rehabilitation at the scene.
The fire is believed to have started from a controlled burn that got out of hand, but the Brunswick County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating to determine the official cause.
