WILMIGTON, N.C. (WWAY) — Among a sizeable amount of teams heading to national tournaments across the South this weekend is one organization that is no stranger to the spotlight.

The Winter Park Optimist club will have their 10U and 12U teams to the Diamond Youth Baseball World Series. The event starts Friday in Lexington, South Carolina.

The 10U team is the first in its age group to ever qualify for the DYBWS in three consecutive years.

Manager Jason Windham says that is a historic feat for the organization.

“It’s a huge accomplishment,” Windham said. “We had to win districts, which is comprised of all of our area teams. Then we had to win the state tournament in Gastonia. The 12U team had to win the state tournament here in Wilmington. You’re competing against the best teams in each division, the best teams in the state. Now we’re going to represent North Carolina in the World Series.”
