Residents voice concerns about proposed development near Monkey Junction

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — More than 30 people came out for a meeting Tuesday about a possible future development being considered near Monkey Junction.

The Woods at Galen is still in the early planning stages, but it would feature 36 duplex units on a 9-acre parcel off Golden Road.

Currently, the developer is waiting for the land to be rezoned from low-density to moderate-high residential use.

Pillie Piner lives next to where the development will be built.

She said the land where it would be built used to be a landfill.

“Back in the day, 40-something years ago, when I built back there, my kids and I, we used to play army back there in the dumpsters and the trash trucks and everything,” Piner said. “They used to dump oil back there. I mean, how you can ever build back there is beyond me.”

WWAY asked the developers who were at the meeting for comment, but they declined.
