New initiative aims to provide safe overnight parking for homeless residents

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Vigilant Hope is a non-profit in Wilmington that’s part of the collaborative Cape Fear Safe Parking Initiative.

Those who live out of their vehicles need a safe place to park.

With more than 50 people living in their vehicles across Wilmington there’s a growing need for a safe place to park to avoid crime, tickets, or towing.

Sam Johnson, a community engagement coordinator with Vigilant Hope, explains the idea.

“We want churches to commit to one week per quarter from the hours of 7 pm to 7 am to opening up their parking lots for an opportunity for folks that are living in their vehicles,” Johnson explained.

Johnson says the goal goes beyond just a place to sleep.

“Longer term respite for folks who are in their vehicles having safe places to park where they are legally allowed to be. it’s gonna help our street outreach teams know who these people are and give them opportunity to build deeper relationships,” Johnson added.

Johnson encourages people to help by using resources they already have.

“It can be a very easy way to use the property you have just to love people and to seek the wholeness of the city,” Johnson said.

Johnson says the community called and they want to answer.

“Real change happens when we listen to the community and let the community name its own needs. We do need people with lived experience at our decision-making tables. The person experiencing the problem is also closest to the solution,” Johnson shared.

Once the program kicks off those in need will have to register through Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) and undergo a background check.

If you are interested in helping a community interest meeting will be held Thursday August 7th at 6 pm at Vigilant Hope Roasting on South 16th Street in Wilmington.
