Burgaw mayor talks about the future while remembering the past during ‘State of the Town’ address

BURGAW, NC (WWAY) — Nearly 40 people gathered in the Burgaw Town Center for Mayor Olivia Dawson’s ‘State of the Town’ address, where she gave an update about the progress that has been made over the years.

“We are proud to report this evening that the state of our town is strong, stable, and moving forward,” Dawson explained. “We are a place where community isn’t just a word, it’s a way of life for us.”

During the speech, she also talked about upcoming projects and plans.

Dawson said the speech was all about transparency.

“People don’t know what they don’t know and so we just need to make sure that we try to make them aware as much as possible. So it’s real important to me to connect with the community and keep them updated.”

She also said moving forward, Burgaw will have to focus even more on balancing its small-town feel while it continues to grow.

“Growth is on the horizon. We need additional housing, we need additional revenues. The things that keep the town growing, not sure how long we could preserve what we have if we didn’t grow.”

Dawson said she’d like to hold more town hall meetings going forward, so residents can ask questions to town leaders and be more involved in government.
