SHALLOTTE, N.C. (WWAY) — Only two Carolina Coast Conference football teams won their opening night game last week, and West Brunswick scored the most points among them.

The Trojans took down county rival South Brunswick 34-14 in Shallotte.

Head Coach Shane Handy says he saw a lot of nice things from his athletes during the contest.

“We got the right guys in the spots that they needed to be,” Handy said. “I was really excited about how the defense ran to the football and made things happen. That’s what I was hoping would happen, but until the bullets fly and the game starts, you just don’t really know where you’re going to end up. But I was really proud of our guys on the defensive side of the football.”

Offensively, West Brunswick picked up 306 rushing yards. Senior Jaquell Davis picked up 150 of them while also finding the end zone twice.

“It felt really great,” Davis said. “Just working hard, getting everything done and all that. Be the same and practice the same and keep the same energy. If we can just work together as a team, we’ll be pretty good.”

Next up is a home game against Whiteville on Friday. The Wolfpack defeated West Columbus 48-8 last week, scoring the most points of any school in the Cape Fear in the process.

“Whiteville’s always tough,” Handy said. “They’re physical. They’re coached well. We’re always really working on trying to get better to be able to line up to them and stopping their offense. It’s usually a pretty tough offense to stop.”

West Brunswick is the only area school with a home game in both weeks one and two. They are also the only one with six total home games this season while everyone else has five or less.
