Labor unions met all across NC for Labor Day
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Labor organizations across the Tar Heel state held rallies today to celebrate Labor Day.
In downtown Wilmington, dozens of people gathered this morning at Thalian Hall in Innes Park on North Third Street.
A number of people participated in what they called — a “workers Labor Day town hall.”
Lynn Shoemaker is vice president of the North Carolina AFLCIO and the president of Southeastern Labor Council.
She says events like this call attention to the needs of the working class.
“It’s really important right now because I believe it’s going to be on the backs of labor that we save little ‘d’ democracy from autocracy.”
Shoemaker says the unions will meet in Wilmington next week for the NC AFLCIO Convention where unions from all across North Carolina will congregate. She is very excited to host these unions in her city.
Labor Day became an official federal holiday in 1894 to honor and recognize the American labor movement and works and contributions of laborers in the US.
