Prescribed burn underway at Holly Shelter Game Land

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission is conducting a prescribed burn today in the Holly Shelter Game Lands, in the area of Lodge Road and Grassy Road, according to the Pender County Fire Marshal’s Office.
Officials said crews burned about 200 acres Thursday, and today’s operation has been coordinated with the N.C. Forest Service.
The Wildlife Resources Commission says prescribed fires are planned, intentional burns carried out under strict conditions to restore and maintain wildlife habitat. The burns are used to create and sustain habitat in old fields, native grasslands and open-canopy woodlands on game lands across the state.
