Events planned in the Cape Fear to honor the 24th anniversary of 9/11

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — Patriot Day is observed on September 11 when Americans across the country will pause for ceremonies and observances remembering the people who were killed or injured during the terrorist attacks in the United States on that day in 2001. The following 9/11 events will be taking place across the Cape Fear.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY

  • Southport Fire Department will host a display in front of fire headquarters at 1011 North Howe Street on Thursday, Sept. 11, at 9 a.m.
  • American Legion Post 543 and the St. James Fire Department will jointly host a remembrance ceremony to honor the 24th anniversary of 9/11 on Thursday, September 11, 10 a.m., at Wright Event Center. Guest speaker Mr. Warren Ihde will share his memories of responding to the attacks, including his efforts to help evacuate people from Manhattan by boat. The program will include the ceremonial fire bell rung by members of the SJ Fire Department, songs by the Seaside Singers, the sounding of Taps, and bagpipe music. This event is open to the public.
  • The Coastal Carolina First Responders Association is hosting a 9/11 Memorial Monument Dedication and Honor Tribute Ceremony on September 11th at 2:00 p.m. Ocean Isle Beach Town Center Park 11 East 2nd Street.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY

  • Wilmington Fire Department will host a 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony on Thursday, Sept. 11, at 9 a.m. at Join the WFD at the Wilmington Fallen Firefighters Memorial to honor the 343 first responders who died during the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001, and the eight Wilmington firefighters who have died while in the line of duty. The ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. at the Wilmington Fallen Firefighters Memorial, located next to WFD Station 2 at Empie Park (3403 Park Avenue). All are welcome as we gather to honor their service and sacrifice.
  • UNCW will hold a 9/11 Ceremony on September 11th from 8:30 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. at the Veterans Hall Quad by the flagpole. It is being hosted by the Office of Military Affairs and the Student Veterans Organization. Click here to RSVP.
  • CFCC will hold a remembrance ceremony to honor the victims, survivors, and first responders of the September 11 attacks. It takes place at the Cape Fear Community College North Campus Safety Training Center Thursday, September 11, at 8:30 a.m.

PENDER COUNTY 

  • Everyone is invited for a special Patriot Day Ceremony on Thursday, September 11th at 5:30 PM at the Burgaw Depot to honor and remember the lives lost, the heroes, and the resilience of our nation following the tragic events of September 11, 2001.
  • The Town of Surf City Fire Department will host its 6th Annual 9/’11 Bridge Walk on Thursday, Sept. 11, at 8:46 a.m. at 517 Roland Avenue, Surf City. Participants will walk together across the Surf City Bridge and back — a powerful tribute to the lives lost and the heroes who rose on September 11th, 2001. Free and open to all, no sign-up required.
