Celebrating National Service Dog Month through September

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) —

Canines for Service is a local non-profit organization that serves veterans nation wide. They train service dogs and pair them with veterans suffering from PTSD, traumatic brain injuries, mobility limitations, and history with military sexual trauma.

The trained service dogs allow veterans to continue to live a more normal day-to-day life.

Bethany Leighton, Executive Director for Canines for Service, says that this month is so important to highlight how impactful service dogs are to the people they serve.

“They do so much to just enhance the quality of life for our veterans that we serve, but service dogs in general really are transformative in really giving people a better quality of life,” said Leighton.

National Service Dog Month is a special way to recognize and highlight the good that service dogs do for their recipients.
