Surf City Police Department reminds drivers to be safe around school buse

SURF CITY, NC (WWAY) — Since the start of the school year, Surf City Police officers have conducted 27 school bus safety operations, resulting in 4 citations issued for bus-related traffic violations. The police department reminds the public to drive safely near school buses.
The police department says when school buses are present, follow these rules:
- Red Lights & Stop Arm: When a school bus has its red lights flashing and stop arm extended, all drivers must stop—this applies in both directions on two-lane roads or undivided highways.
- Divided Highways: On roads with a raised median or physical barrier, only traffic behind the bus must stop. Traffic traveling the opposite direction may proceed with caution.
- Yellow Flashing Lights: Slow down—this signals the bus is preparing to stop.
- Extra Caution in School Zones: Reduce speed, watch for crossing children, and be prepared for unexpected stops.
