UNCW Chancellor addresses campus following false gunman reports

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — UNC Wilmington’s chancellor addressed the campus community after a tense and emotional day marked by reports of a possible gunman that triggered a massive law enforcement response.
Chancellor Aswani Volety said he sheltered alongside dozens of members faculty, staff and students in the Bernie Center while police worked to investigate the threat. University police, with the help of local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, worked to secure campus buildings and ultimately confirmed there was no active threat.
Volety praised the extraordinary response of law enforcement, noting that “hundreds of officers” converged on UNCW. He assured students and staff that their safety remains the top priority. “It was a tough day and it may have been a restless night,” Volety said. “But today is a new and better day here at UNCW.”
