UNCW pauses painting on spirit rocks, freedom of expression events amid safety concerns

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — UNC Wilmington is temporarily halting use of its campus spirit rocks and pausing freedom of expression events following tensions and threats tied to recent campus incidents.

The university said painting will not be allowed on the spirit rocks located near Fisher Student Union and Wagoner Dining Hall. In addition, any scheduled freedom of expression permits for the University Amphitheater and Wagoner lawn will be postponed to later dates.

Officials said the decision is part of broader safety measures after last week’s events. UNCW Police have increased patrols and visibility at campus entrances and on foot, with additional law enforcement personnel joining the team. Campus residence halls also have stepped-up staffing, security support, and police rounds.

Students still have options for expression under existing university policies, including spontaneous demonstrations that don’t disrupt campus operations.

Chancellor Aswani Volety previously emphasized the importance of civility and respect, encouraging the community to pause and reflect on how it engages in dialogue. University leaders say the pause is temporary and aimed at creating a safer environment for all.

Violations of the restrictions will be addressed under the Code of Student Life and campus facility policies.
