Brunswick County rallies after tragedy and local businesses and artists are pitching in

SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — Many Brunswick County businesses are stepping up to support those impacted by Saturday’s deadly shooting.

Island Grindz, which owns a handful of restaurants in Southport and Oak Island, will be hosting a fundraiser at their restaurant Koko Cabana on Friday.

Account Manager Destiny Watson says the event is about strengthening connections. Proceeds will go to the families impacted by the shooting.

“We really want to use this event to foster the community, you know, we’re already tight knit but we can only get closer,” said Watson.

Local artists are also lending their talents.

The Southport Gooney Bird Artist will offer 600 to 800 of her signature paintings for donation on October 18th.

Southport resident and children’s book artist, Hope Spencer, says she wants to see the support from all angles.

“We want to see people come out and support Southport, and support the Gooney Bird artist, and support our community,” said Spencer.

Proceeds from the art fundraiser will go to ‘Southport Cares,’ an organization created by first responders years ago, to do more for the victims they encounter.

Southport Fire Chief and board member Charles Drew says Southport is a strong community, and these fundraisers will bring donations needed to support those affected.

“The community kicks in, gives these donations, businesses have contacted us about fundraisers, and that’s going to help to cover expenses and help a lot of people that have been, that have been so, impacted by this tragic event,” said Drew.

There are also t-shirts for sale to raise money for the first confirmed victim’s family. The link is below.
