The 1865 Society and Pender Arts Council bring Traveling Exhibit to Burgaw

BURGAW, NC (WWAY) — A new exhibit celebrating North Carolina Women Making History is now open in Pender County.

The 1865 society and Pender Arts Council hosted the opening reception on Saturday, featuring guest speakers and a special traveling exhibit on loan from the Museum of Albemarle.

Burgaw Mayor Olivia Dawson and Cassandra Sidberry—the first African American female fire officer in North Carolina and first female officer in Wilmington—spoke at the opening reception.

Photographs on the exhibit panels reflect young girls working in textile mills, students at Elizabeth City State Colored Normal School, female nurses during World War II, women protesting the use of nuclear power, and a Cherokee woman in her mountain home.

The exhibit will be on display at the Pender Arts Council.
