‘Less Is More’: Local company delivers shipping container home in Wilmington backyard
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY-TV) – Have you ever wondered what it might be like living inside a shipping container? Well, there’s a company that aims to make those dreams come true.
Craftspace, a locally-based container design company delivered it’s first shipping container home. Bryan Kristof, CEO of Craftspace said it’s been a long time coming.
“I puts a big smile on our face to see it,” Kristof said. “It’s been a big learning curve going through the certification process.”
Not only is the home unique for its’ make, but 95% of it was built inside the company’s factory before delivering it to the property.
“Typically you have to do an onsite build where you have to bring all your trades in to the construction site, so you’ve got weather conditions you’ve got to deal with to potential delays,” Kristof said.
The 320-square-foot home was installed in the backyard of a downtown Wilmington residence. The home features one bedroom, one bathroom, a open kitchen and more.
Kristof said this type of home is great for those looking to live in a smaller space.
“People like the simplicity of it, kind of less is more,” Kristof said. “It’s a lot easier to clean that’s for sure, but it allows you focus more on the importance things I think in life.”
Kristof said the state requires them to use new shipping containers which are shipped over seas.
“They come shipped as a one trip with dry goods so we know there’s no chemicals or anything like that,” Kristof said.
Craftspace constructs these homes on request by a property owner. The home costs around $95,000 with additional costs coming in around $40,000 for permits, delivery and more.
“You know, our hope is that we can do more of these,” Kristof said. “They are great as an additional rental income or an in-law suite.”
