Feast Down East announces free local food for SNAP recipients

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Feast Down East, a local non-profit, launched an expanded ‘Fresh Bucks’ benefit that provides fresh food during a time of instability in federal food assistance programs.
The program provides $50 in free local food to any SNAP customer shopping at the Local Motive Mobile Farmers’ Market with no matching dollars required.
The benefit is funded by existing funds from the Anonymous Trust and new funds from the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation.
In 2024, Feast Down East contributed more than $2 million in community impact, moved 249,000 pounds of local food into the region, and returned $397,062 directly to farmers.
