Brunswick County Planning Board denies nearly 1500 home development

BOLIVIA, NC (WWAY) — The Brunswick County Planning Board held its monthly meeting on Monday, where an unpopular development was discussed.

The Green Hills development proposed building roughly 1,450 single-family homes on about 784 acres along Green Hills Road in Winnabow.

Area residents like Haleigh McFarland spoke out against the development.

She said there are several issues trying to build in that location.

“It floods like crazy down that road, it’s already unsafe,” McFarland said. “We have way too much traffic going in and out as it is and they’re talking about 12,000 more cars associated with this development and our country roads just can’t handle that and we don’t have the infrastructure.”

McFarland said the county should look to put a moratorium on development and focus on improving roads, services and other infrastructure, so the county can handle more developments in the future.

The development was denied by the board by a 3-2 vote.
