UNCW, Camp Lejeune officials debunk rumors of Marines being targeted
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Officials at UNC Wilmington say there is no truth to social media rumors claiming U.S. Marines were being jumped or targeted by fraternity members.
University leaders say UNCW Police worked with Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and local law enforcement after receiving a small number of calls and emails expressing concern about the allegations. After what officials describe as an extensive review, they determined the claims to be completely unfounded.
UNCW says the rumors circulating online are “falsehoods” that undermine the shared values of honor and service upheld by both the university and the Marine Corps.
In a news release, the university said it has longstanding ties to the military community. Founded in 1947 to help World War II veterans transition to civilian life, UNCW now serves about 2,400 military-affiliated students and veterans, about 12% of the student body. Veterans Week events kicked off Friday, Nov. 7, with a parachute landing on campus by the All Veteran Group. Additional events include a fitness expo, the regional Veterans Day parade, and a Veterans Day service and luncheon.
UNCW also hosts The Honor Foundation, a 12-week transition program for Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command, in Veterans Hall. Student organizations regularly support the Office of Military Affairs. The Kappa Sigma fraternity chapter has raised more than $40,000 for local veteran groups through its Music for Military Heroes concert series and was the first fraternity at UNCW to establish a scholarship for veterans.
