Dozens gather outside Wilmington International Airport to protest against Avelo Airlines

Wilmington, NC (WWAY)– On one of the busiest days of traveling for Wilmington International Airport, dozens gathered outside the airport to protest Avelo airlines. On Sunday, the local Wilmington Boycott Avelo Coalition, gathered outside ILM to protest against Avelo airline’s partnership with Immigration and Custom Enforcement on deporting illegal immigrants.

The deportation flights are not illegal, but Joel barrio, the lead organizer, says its unethical and they don’t want it in the community.

“It’s really important that we don’t allow other airlines to make their own contracts with ICE. We will be showing that with our communities boycotting them across our country,” said Barrio.

While dozens gathered outside, Barrio says this protest is part of something much bigger.

“Currently there are 20 other protests occurring in 17 airports across 12 states. This is a big joining of the American people, saying that they don’t want any business that supports ICE in their community,” said Barrio.

The organization demands a change as they will continue to keep boycotting until something is resolved.

“Overall, our demands are that we are asking Avelo to drop the 150-million-dollar contract with ICE, or leave our communities until we drop our boycott,” said Barrio.

Jeff Bourk, the director at ILM, says they have a great relationship with the Avelo Airlines.

“Avelo Airlines have no ICE flights in or out of Wilmington. We think they are great partners. We are glad they are part of our community. They do things like taking kids on discovery flights to Houston, Detroit, Tampa and Fort Lauderdale. They really give back a lot.

Avelo airlines sent WWAY a statement regarding the protests.

“We recognize the right of individuals to peacefully assemble. Avelo’s main priority continues to be maintaining the safety and timeliness of our operation that over 8.3 million customers across the country continue to enjoy,” said Avelo Airlines.
