RALEIGH, NC (WWAY) — The North Carolina Department of Labor has released the state’s first “Elevator Index,” a new metric designed to measure economic growth by tracking elevator-related activity across the state.

The inaugural report shows a 2.36% year-over-year increase in active devices statewide, including elevators, escalators, and moving walkways, rising from 31,494 in fiscal year 2024 to 32,236 in fiscal year 2025. According to the department, the upward trend reflects increased construction and economic activity.

The report also shows a 17.30% increase in elevator inspections, growing from 27,439 in fiscal year 2024 to 32,205 in fiscal year 2025. The department attributes the rise to both economic growth and its emphasis on timely annual inspections and efficient staffing.

The Elevator Index will be updated quarterly, with an annual report released each December. The data is compiled by the Department of Labor’s Elevator and Amusement Device Bureau and includes permits, installations, and inspections across all 100 counties
