WCA girls pitch rare shutout in 67-0 win over Scotland Christian

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) — Wilmington Christian Academy girls basketball accomplished something on Monday few have seen before.
The Patriots defeated Scotland Christian 67-0, marking the rare feat of shutting out an opponent in a varsity basketball contest.
WCA went into halftime up 41-0, which was unusual enough as is.
They then entered the 4th leading 49-0 with the running clock in effect the rest of the way while not allowing the Saints to net a single point by the time the scoreboard hit triple zero.
Taylor Pierce led Patriots with 15 points. Ava Gray, Mallory Deutsch and Brooke Coptsias tied for the second most points with 12 each. Deutsch had ten rebounds while Gray was behind her with six. Defensively, the team registered 30 steals with Lauren Steinhauer leading that category with six.
The players were very surprised by the shutout as they can’t think of a time this has happened before with any team.
“Definitely not,” Gray said. “Especially in a private school, normally the competition is pretty leveled. But I think our team is definitely above that level. To be honest, I don’t think we gave full effort on defense. But we still didn’t want to give them the easy ones. We wanted to get our own points up. I think we’re going to talk about it, learn lessons from it to never let up for your own pride I guess.”
WWAY asked Head Coach Chris Staton, the officials working the game and others if they have ever seen a shutout before in a varsity basketball game. Everyone said they had not.
