Novant Health cardiologist warns of ‘Holiday Heart Syndrome’ from stress, alcohol and big meals

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY-TV) – From holiday travel to family stress and festive meals, medical experts are warning those who celebrate to be aware of “holiday heart syndrome.”

The syndrome is defined by an abnormal heartbeat that can be triggered by high levels of stress, excessive alcohol intake, big meals and dehydration.

Medical experts said if someone experiences increasing high blood pressure, head aches, dizziness, shortness of breath and chest pain they should contact their doctor.

Cory Jackson, a interventional cardiologist at Novant Health Heart and Vascular Institute, said patients who have pre-existing cardiovascular disease are at high risk for the syndrome.

“We want everyone to have fun as they go to celebrate with their families, but moderation is key, overindulgence is going to put you at risk of having abnormal heart rhythms or having an adverse cardiac event,” Jackson said.

Jackson said maintaining a good level of physical activity and hydration while avoiding high salt intake is crucial while enjoying the holidays.
